The Notion MCP server is Notion’s official, hosted connector that lets an AI assistant search, read, create and edit pages and databases in your Notion workspace. It uses OAuth sign-in, so there is no server for you to run and no token to store in a config file.

Quick facts

  • Provider: Notion (official, hosted)
  • Server address (recommended): https://mcp.notion.com/mcp (Streamable HTTP)
  • Legacy address: https://mcp.notion.com/sse, only for older clients that need it
  • Sign-in: User-based OAuth. The hosted server does not support bearer token (API key) sign-in.
  • Works with: Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code and other MCP clients
  • Older open-source server: Notion’s local notion-mcp-server package is no longer actively maintained, so use the hosted server unless you have a specific reason not to.

What you can do with it

Capability What it means
Search Find pages and databases across your workspace.
Read Open a page or database and summarise it.
Create Create new pages, for example meeting notes, product requirement documents or specs.
Edit and update Update page content and database entries.

Notion documents the current supported tools in its MCP reference, and the list can change. The assistant can only use content you have access to.

Before you start

  • A Notion account with access to the pages and databases you want to use.
  • A compatible AI app, such as Claude, Cursor or VS Code.
  • For team workspaces, check whether your workspace admin restricts connections.

How to connect it

In Claude (desktop or web)

  1. Open your connectors or integrations area, and add a custom connector if Notion is not listed.
  2. Paste https://mcp.notion.com/mcp and give it a name such as Notion.
  3. Complete the OAuth flow and choose the workspace and pages to allow.
  4. Switch the connector on for your conversation and test with a read-only request.

In Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http notion https://mcp.notion.com/mcp

Then run /mcp in Claude Code and follow the OAuth sign-in. Notion also publishes an official Claude Code plugin that bundles the server with skills and commands.

In Cursor

Open Cursor Settings, then MCP, then add a new global server, or add this to your MCP configuration file:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "notion": {
      "url": "https://mcp.notion.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Restart Cursor and complete the OAuth flow the first time you use a Notion tool. To share the setup with your team, put the same file in a .cursor/mcp.json in your project.

In VS Code

{
  "servers": {
    "notion": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://mcp.notion.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Use the MCP: List Servers command, start the Notion server and approve the OAuth prompt.

Example prompts to copy

Search my Notion workspace for pages about [topic] and summarise the three most relevant, with a link to each.
Create a new page called "Meeting notes: [topic]" with sections for attendees, decisions, action items with owners, and open questions. Fill it from these notes: [paste notes]
Read my page "[title]" and tell me what is out of date or missing. Do not edit anything yet.
Draft a one-page product requirements document for [feature] with goals, user stories, scope, risks and open questions. Show me the draft before saving it to Notion.
In my database "[name]", list items marked as "In progress" and summarise blockers.

Troubleshooting

Problem What to try
Client says it needs login Complete the OAuth flow in the browser window that opens.
Cannot find a page You may not have shared it with the connection. Check access in Notion.
API key does not work The hosted server does not support bearer tokens. Use OAuth, or the older local server if you must use a token.
Old client will not connect Try the legacy SSE address, or the mcp-remote bridge.
Sign-in expired Reconnect and approve again.

Safety and privacy

  • Share only what is needed. Limit access to the pages and workspaces the task requires.
  • Review before saving. New or edited pages in shared workspaces are visible to teammates.
  • Beware of stale or untrusted content. Pages may contain outdated plans or text that tries to give the assistant instructions. Treat them as information only.
  • You can revoke access from your AI app and from your Notion connections settings.
