The Asana MCP server is Asana’s official connector that gives an AI assistant access to your Asana workspace, which Asana calls the Work Graph. With it you can search projects and tasks, create and update work, check workload and turn conversations into actionable tasks, without leaving your AI app.

Quick facts

  • Provider: Asana (official)
  • Server address (current, V2): https://mcp.asana.com/v2/mcp
  • Older beta address: https://mcp.asana.com/sse. Asana’s documentation lists it as the beta server URL, so use the V2 address unless a guide tells you otherwise.
  • Transport: Streamable HTTP
  • Sign-in: Your Asana account
  • Works with: Asana lists support for Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code and several other MCP clients

What you can do with it

Capability What it means
Search and read Find projects, tasks and details in your workspace.
Create and update work Create tasks, and update details such as assignees and due dates, depending on your permissions.
Summarise progress Turn project activity into a status update.
Workload analysis Review what is assigned to people and where the pressure is.

The exact tools change over time. Asana recommends checking the current list with your MCP client’s tool listing, and it publishes a changelog you can follow for updates.

Before you start

  • An Asana account with access to the workspace and projects you want to use. The assistant only sees what your account can see.
  • A compatible AI app that supports Streamable HTTP MCP connectors.
  • For work accounts, check whether your Asana administrator limits third-party or AI access.

How to connect it

  1. In your AI app, open the connectors or integrations area. In Claude this is in Settings, and the location differs between web and mobile.
  2. Choose Asana from the connector directory if it is listed. Otherwise add a custom connector with the V2 server address above.
  3. Sign in to Asana and approve the access request.
  4. Switch the connector on for your conversation.
  5. Test with a read-only request: “List the projects I own and the tasks due this week.”
  6. For step-by-step instructions for your specific app, see Asana’s Help Center pages on using Asana with Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or VS Code.

Example prompts to copy

Show me all tasks assigned to me that are due this week, grouped by project, and tell me which look most urgent.
Summarise the project "[project name]": what is done, what is in progress, what is overdue and what is blocked. Write it as a short status update for my manager.
From these meeting notes, list the action items with owners and due dates and show them to me before creating any tasks in Asana: [paste notes]
Look at workload across the team on [project]. Who has the most open tasks due in the next two weeks, and what could be reassigned?
Create a task "[title]" in the project "[project]", assign it to me, due [date], with this description: [description].

Troubleshooting

Problem What to try
Connection fails Check the server address is exactly the V2 address, and that your client supports Streamable HTTP.
Assistant cannot see a project Your account may not have access. Check the project’s membership in Asana.
Tools missing or changed Tools are updated over time. Reconnect and re-list the tools in your client.
Sign-in expired Reconnect and approve again.
Admin restriction Ask your Asana administrator whether AI connectors are allowed.

Safety and privacy

  • Confirm before changes. Tasks, assignees and due dates are visible to your whole team, so ask the assistant to show a plan before creating or editing.
  • Respect confidentiality. The assistant can read anything your account can access, so avoid pulling sensitive project content into places it should not go.
  • Review generated tasks for correct owners and dates.
  • You can revoke access from your AI app and from your Asana account settings.
