Daily News Digest by Email

Email yourself a daily, grouped and linked digest of your RSS sources, with duplicate removal, a daily item cap and a four-platform build guide.

Free 21 views 0 copies 0 downloads

This workflow emails you a short daily digest of the sources you follow. It reads your chosen RSS feeds each morning, keeps only items from the last 24 hours, removes duplicates and asks an AI model for a one- or two-sentence summary of each item based on the feed text, grouped by theme. Every item links to the original so you can read the source.

At a glance

Trigger A daily schedule, for example 7 a.m.
Result One email with grouped, linked summaries of the day’s items
Platforms Make, Zapier, n8n, Power Automate
Difficulty Beginner to intermediate
Setup time 1 to 2 hours
Human approval None needed. It sends only to you. Read the original articles for anything important.

What it does and does not do

It does It does not
Collect new items from several feeds Copy full articles into the email
Remove duplicates and old items Verify the accuracy of articles
Summarise briefly and group by theme Replace reading the original source
Link every item to its source Publish the digest anywhere public

Before you start

  • A list of feed addresses for the sites you follow (most news, blog and research sites publish one).
  • An AI account with a spending limit and an email account for sending.
  • A cap on items per day, for example 20, to control cost and reading time.

Plan your digest

Decision Suggested setting
Number of feeds 5 to 10 to start
Items per day Maximum 20, newest first
Time window Last 24 hours (use 72 hours on Mondays to cover the weekend)
Themes Three to five themes that matter to you, plus “Other”
Delivery Email to yourself at the start of your day

The AI instruction (copy and paste)

You write a daily news digest. Use ONLY the item titles and descriptions below. Do not add outside facts, and do not claim to have read the full articles.

My themes: [theme 1], [theme 2], [theme 3], Other
Items (JSON list with title, source, link, description): {{Items}}

Return ONLY valid JSON: {"themes": [{"name": "", "items": [{"title": "", "summary": "", "link": "", "source": ""}]}]}
Rules:
- summary: one or two sentences in your own words, based only on the title and description.
- Put each item under the single best theme. Use "Other" if unsure.
- If the description is empty, write "No summary available" and keep the link.
- Keep every link exactly as given.

Build steps

  1. Schedule the workflow daily.
  2. Read each feed for its latest items.
  3. Combine the items into one list.
  4. Filter to items published within your time window.
  5. Remove duplicates by link or by very similar titles.
  6. Limit to your maximum number of items, newest first.
  7. Skip if empty. If there are no items, stop without sending.
  8. Call the AI model and read the JSON.
  9. Build the email with headings per theme and a linked title and summary per item.
  10. Send the email to yourself.

Test plan

Test Expected result
Run with three feeds One email with grouped, linked summaries
Two feeds with the same story The story appears once
A day with no new items No email sent
An item with no description “No summary available” and a working link
Check every link All links open the original article

Cost and limits

  • Each feed read and each step counts toward platform usage, so keep your feed list modest.
  • One AI call per day with up to 20 items is inexpensive, but very long item lists increase input size.
  • Some feeds publish only titles or have limits. Others may be slow or unavailable.

Security and privacy

  • Send the digest only to yourself or people who should receive it.
  • Do not copy full articles. Summarise briefly and link to the source, which respects publishers’ rights.
  • Treat summaries as pointers, not facts. Open the article for anything you will rely on or share.

Variations

  • Weekly roundup: run weekly and ask for the five most important stories.
  • Team digest: post to a team chat channel instead of email.
  • Keyword filter: keep only items mentioning words you care about.
  • Research mode: pass the best items to the Research Analyst Agent for a deeper briefing.

Troubleshooting

Problem Fix
Old items appear Check the date filter and the time zone of the published dates.
Duplicates appear Compare links after removing tracking parameters.
Digest too long Lower the item limit and ask for one sentence per item.
A feed stops working Check the feed address and remove or replace it.
