Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

AI coding editor, now Devin Desktop from Cognition

Freemium

What is Windsurf (Devin Desktop)?

Windsurf is an AI coding editor that combines autocomplete, inline edits and an agent that can plan and make changes across a project. It began as the Codeium editor. Cognition, the company behind the Devin coding agent, now owns it, and sources report that Cognition rebranded it Devin Desktop on 2 June 2026. The windsurf.com address now redirects to devin.ai, and plans and prices were reported unchanged, so you may see either name.

Quick facts

  • Made by: Cognition, the maker of Devin, which acquired Windsurf in 2025
  • Free plan: Yes, with a limited agent quota. Tab completions and inline edits are reported as unlimited on every plan.
  • Paid plans: Pro, Max and Teams, plus custom Enterprise
  • Works on: A desktop editor for Windows, macOS and Linux
  • Pricing last checked: October 2026, using several recent published sources. The brand and pricing page moved to Devin, and listings differ on Teams pricing, so confirm on the official page.

What Windsurf is best at

  • Agent-style coding: describe a task and let the agent plan and edit across files, while you review the changes.
  • Fast autocomplete and inline edits: Tab suggestions and quick edits that do not count against your quota.
  • Choice of models: models from several providers are available, with heavier use drawing on your quota.
  • A familiar editor: a code editor layout with AI built into it, rather than a chat window beside your tools.
  • Privacy options for teams: sources report zero data retention by default on paid seats, which you should confirm in writing.

Plans and pricing

Plan Price What it adds
Free $0 A limited daily and weekly agent quota, with unlimited Tab completions and inline edits reported.
Pro $20 per month Higher quotas and full model access. Extra usage can be bought at the underlying model’s API price.
Max $200 per month Much higher quotas for intensive daily use.
Teams Reported as $80 per month plus $40 per full developer seat, or $40 per user in some listings Everything in Pro with centralised billing, an admin dashboard and priority support.
Enterprise Custom quote Negotiated with Cognition’s sales team.

In early 2026 Windsurf replaced its credit system with daily and weekly usage quotas. Students were reported to be able to get Pro at roughly half price with a verified education email. Because the brand and billing are being folded into Devin, always confirm the current plan names and the Teams pricing on the official page before you buy.

Best for

  • Developers who want an AI-first editor with an agent built in.
  • Teams that want shared billing and admin controls on an AI editor.
  • People who like quota-based plans with the option to pay for extra use.

Less suited to

  • Anyone who wants stable branding and pricing, since the product and plans are moving under Devin.
  • Developers who prefer to stay in an editor they already use. GitHub Copilot works inside many editors.
  • Users who want a fixed monthly cost for heavy agent use, because extra usage is billed on top.

How to get started

  1. Download the editor from the official site, which now redirects to Devin, and sign in on the free plan.
  2. Open a small project and try autocomplete and an inline edit first.
  3. Give the agent one well-described task, then read every change it proposes before accepting it.
  4. Watch how quickly you use your quota, and compare Pro against your real usage.
  5. For a team, confirm data-retention and training terms in writing before rolling it out.

Prompt ideas to copy

Add input validation to the signup form in this project. Follow the existing patterns, add tests and list every file you changed.
Find where we handle failed payments, explain how the flow works and point out two risks.
Migrate this module from callbacks to async/await without changing behaviour. Run the tests after each step.
Write a README section for this service covering setup, environment variables and how to run the tests.

Limitations and things to watch

  • Agent changes can be wrong or insecure, so review and test everything.
  • The brand, pricing page and plan structure are changing as Cognition folds it into Devin.
  • Quotas replace credits, and heavy use can mean extra charges.
  • Check your organisation’s rules before using private code with any AI editor.

Alternatives
