How to Write an SEO-Friendly Article with AI

A practical workflow for writing search-friendly articles with AI: check intent, outline, draft in sections, add original value, fact-check and finish the on-page basics.

  • Updated

AI can speed up drafting, but pages still earn attention by being accurate, useful and different from what already exists. This guide shows a workflow for writing search-friendly articles with AI while keeping quality high: understand intent, plan, draft in sections, add what only you can add, fact-check and finish the on-page basics.

What you will learn

  • How to check search intent before writing.
  • How to outline and draft section by section.
  • How to add original value that AI cannot.
  • A pre-publish checklist.

Time: 1 to 3 hours per article. Level: Beginner to intermediate.

A note on expectations

No method guarantees rankings. Search engines aim to reward helpful, reliable content, so the goal is to publish pages that genuinely help readers, not to produce text in bulk.

Step 1: Choose one keyword and understand the intent

Search for the phrase yourself. Look at the top results and note what type of page ranks (guide, list, product, comparison), what questions they answer and what they miss. Decide what the searcher wants: to learn, to compare or to buy.

For the search phrase "[keyword]", describe the likely intent, what a searcher wants to learn, and 5 questions a great page should answer.

Step 2: Build the outline first

Ask for one H1 and 5 to 8 H2 sections, then adjust using your knowledge. Remove sections that repeat each other and add any the top pages miss.

Create an outline for an article on "[keyword]" for [audience]. One H1, 6 H2 sections, one line on what each covers. Mark where an example, table or checklist would help.

Step 3: Draft section by section

Drafting in sections gives better control than asking for the entire article at once. Give each section its notes, facts and the points you want included. For a ready-made instruction, use the SEO Article Writer skill.

  • Put the direct answer first, then explain.
  • Use short paragraphs and plain words.
  • Do not stuff keywords. Use the phrase naturally in the title, early on and in one heading.

Step 4: Add what AI cannot

This step is what makes your page different.

  • Your own experience, examples and mistakes.
  • Original data, screenshots or photos.
  • Quotes from real people, with permission.
  • Local or industry knowledge.

Step 5: Fact-check and edit

Verify every statistic, date and claim. See How to Fact-Check AI Answers. Remove filler, repeated points and anything you would not say yourself.

Step 6: Finish the on-page basics

Element What to do
Title tag Clear, about 50 to 60 characters, keyword near the start where natural
Meta description Honest summary of about 140 to 155 characters
Headings One H1, logical H2 and H3 order
Images Useful images with descriptive alt text
Internal links Link to related pages with descriptive anchor text
Sources Link to reliable sources where helpful

The Meta Title and Description Generator can help with the first two.

Step 7: Publish, then improve

After publishing, check how the page performs and which searches reach it. Update it when facts change or you can answer more questions.

Common mistakes

  • Publishing raw AI output.
  • Targeting several keywords with one page.
  • Invented statistics and citations.
  • Copying competitors’ structure with no added value.
  • Producing many thin pages quickly.

Pre-publish checklist

  • Intent matches what the page delivers.
  • Facts and sources checked.
  • Your own value added.
  • Title, meta description, headings and links done.
  • A human has read it from start to finish.

Frequently asked questions

Search engines focus on quality and helpfulness rather than how content was produced, but low-quality, mass-produced or misleading content is a risk.

How long should the article be?

As long as it needs to be to answer the question well. Length is not a goal in itself.
