How to install a skill

Three ways to add a skill to your AI tool: a one-line command, a downloaded folder, or a zip. Includes where the files go and how to check it worked.

Every skill on Promptsio is free to download. Pick the method that suits you.

Step by step

0/5 done
  1. 1 Method 1: the install command

If a skill page shows a command like the one below, copy it and run it in your project folder.

    npx skills add owner/repo

The command downloads the skill and puts it where your tool expects it. It needs Node.js. Commands are shown only for skills hosted on GitHub.

  2. 2 Method 2: download and copy

Press Download skill to get SKILL.md. Make a folder named after the skill and put the file inside it. Then place the folder in one of these:

    • .claude/skills/ inside your project, to use it only there.
    • ~/.claude/skills/ in your home folder, to use it everywhere.

Other tools use their own folder; check your tool's documentation for the skills location.

  3. 3 Method 3: a zip file

Some skills include scripts or reference files and come as a .zip. Unzip it so the folder (with SKILL.md at its top) lands in your skills folder.

  4. 4 Check it before you trust it

A skill is instructions, and some include code. Open SKILL.md and read it. If there is a scripts folder, read those files before running anything. Promptsio marks skills that contain scripts.

  5. 5 Check that it worked

Restart your tool, then ask for what the skill does. In Claude Code you can also ask "What skills do you have?". If it is not listed, check the folder name and that SKILL.md sits directly inside it.
